SUMMARY:Asia/Americas Office Hour: Correlating image quality with machine vision performance
DESCRIPTION:The task of computer vision (CV) involves analyzing a stream of images from an imaging device. Some simple applications\, such as object counting\, may be less dependent on good camera quality. But for more advanced CV applications with limited control of lighting & distance\, the quality of your overall vision system will depend on the quality of your camera system. This is increasingly important when an error made by the vision system could lead to a decision that impacts safety. Along with proper optimization of a CV model\, ensuring that that model is fed by imagery from a high-quality camera system is critical to maximizing your system’s performance. \nOffice hours include selected topics but are not limited to them. Ask any questions you like when you register or during the call. We’ll try to answer all questions that are submitted if time allows. Office hours are usually held on the third Wednesday of each month at 11:00 am MT for Europe and the Americas and the fourth Wednesday at 7:00 pm MT (9:00 am the next day in China) for Asia and the Americas. View the schedule of upcoming office hours here. \n\nClick here to register for the Office Hour \nRelated Links\n\nCorrelating the Performance of Computer Vision Algorithms with Objective Image Quality Metrics\nImage information metrics: Information Capacity and More

The new metrics include Noise Equivalent Quanta (NEQ)\, Ideal Observer SNR (SNRi)\, and Edge location standard deviation (Edge σ). They can be measured from slanted edges as well as Siemens star and dead leaves (spilled coins) test chart images.¬ We cover \n\nthe origin and significance of information capacity\, and its use as a fundamental metric for qualifying cameras\,\nthe effect on measurements of common types of image processing\, especially the bilateral filters found in most JPEG images\,\nthe distinction between total information capacity and information capacity for contrast-limited patterns (typically 4:1 or 60% Michelson contrast slanted edges)\, which can be measured for a wide range of exposures\,\nobtaining the metrics for object detection (SNRi) and the object location (Edge σ)\,\nthe effects of sharpening and lowpass (noise-reduction) filtering\, showing how excessive sharpening degrades performance\,\ndesign of matched filters to optimize SNRi and Edge σ for specific tasks\, and tradeoffs for multiple tasks\nprogress in correlating the new metrics with standard machine vison performance metrics\, such as Mean Average Precision (mAP) and Intersection over Union (IoU)\, which are related to object detection and location.\n\n\n\nSee also Image Information Metrics. \nVisit Imatest’s Booth #334 for Demonstrations\n \nLeader SFR-Fit camera resolution measurement software measures MTF (Modulation Transfer Function). MTF indicates spatial frequency characteristics using multiple distortion and uniformity-corrected sine patterns that can be presented across one or more displays. \nConventional MTF measurement methods can have issues with black box camera systems that prevent the acquisition of the RAW or minimally processed image.  If these systems have sharpening enabled\, slanted edges can overstate MTF\, especially at high frequencies. \nThe SFR-Fit measurement system can produce highly accurate measurements of automotive cameras is compatible with ultra-wide-angle lenses. \nCalibrated Reference Camera for Camera Monitor System (CMS) testing with Leader SFR-Fit  \nBy using SFR-Fit Ver2.4 and a calibrated reference camera\, you can measure the MTF of a CMS electronic mirror. \n\nSFRreg Field Ruggedized Target \n \n  Watch On Demand \nPrevious Event: AutoSens USA 2024

SUMMARY:Imatest Presented at AutoSens USA 2024
DESCRIPTION:Leader SFR-Fit MTF Measurement Software\n \nSFR-Fit is camera resolution measurement software that measures MTF (Modulation Transfer Function). \nLearn More\n  \n\nYou can watch all the Imatest presentations at AutoSens USA 2024\, and many many more by purchasing an AutoSens On-Demand Pass \nImatest AutoSens Talks\nJonathan Phillips\nVP Imaging Science \nCamera Image Quality for ADAS – How Good is Good Enough?\nTuesday May 21st\, 2-5pm \nThis tutorial will provide a detailed understanding of the camera image quality standards and metrics that relate to ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). The content will cover key image quality factors (e.g.\, sharpness\, noise\, distortion\, and color) and the metrics that provide quantification of these factors (e.g.\, spatial frequency response\, temporal noise\, camera projection model\, and color error)\, Discussion will include how to determine if key performance indicators (KPIs) are being met and how to relate these to camera system performance. Metrics will include those from the IEEE P2020 standard\, ISO TC42 Photography standards\, and novel image information metrics that relate to machine vision and object recognition. \n\nNorman Koren\nFounder / CTO \nKeynote – New camera quality measurements for optimizing Machine Vision systems\nWednesday May 22nd\, 10am \nWe describe information capacity measurements\, which can be derived from slanted edge\, Siemens star\, and dead leaves images (focusing on slanted edges)\, and why they should be used to qualify cameras for machine vision systems. \nThen we describe two key metrics\, closely related to information capacity\, that are superior to standard sharpness (MTF or SFR) and noise measurements for characterizing camera performance. \n\nobject detection (SNRi)\, and\nobject location (closely related to edge detection).\n\nWe also discuss several topics related to information metrics\, including \n\nthe effects of image processing (raw\, minimal\, uniform\, nonuniform processing)\nhow to design electronic filters\, called matched filters\, for optimizing the key metrics\,\nwhy excessive sharpening (which may look good for human vision) can be harmful for machine vision\,\nan approach to measuring information capacity for contrast-limited patterns (typically 4:1 or 60% Michelson contrast) over a wide range of exposures\, down to dim light.\n\nPaul Romanczyk\nSenior Imaging Scientist \nWhy stray light (flare) is an issue for automotive cameras\n  \nThursday May 23rd\, 11am \nThe push toward autonomous driving is leading to the inclusion of camera systems in cars. The variability of scene content in automotive requires that these cameras be usable across a large dynamic range. Image artifacts and degradations caused by stray light limit the performance of the camera systems.  \nStray-light-induced degradation of image quality will adversely affect both the machine learning/computer vision (ML/CV) algorithmic performance and the human perception of the image. This talk will briefly cover testing methodologies under development for quantifying a camera system’s stray-light performance. \n \n\nSarah Kerr\nImaging Scientist \nPanel discussion: Standards for Automotive Safety: the crucial role of IEEE P2020 Automotive Image Quality Working Group.\nWeds May 22nd\, 5.30 – 6.15pm \nJoin us for a compelling panel discussion highlighting the pivotal role of the IEEE P2020 Automotive Image Quality Working Group. DESCRIPTION:Imatest attended Electronic Imaging 2024. \nImatest exhibited our Benchtop Test Stand\, new ISO 12233 chart\, and webcam test setup. \n\nKeynote — Image information metrics from slanted edges: a toolkit of metrics to aid object recognition\, machine vision\, and artificial intelligence systems\nEvaluation of Signal and Noise Metrics of High Dynamic Range Image Sensors by IEEE P2020 Methodology\nEvaluating Camera Performance in Face-Present Scenes with Diverse Skin Tones\nRecommendations for the Detection and Analysis of the ISO 12233:2023 e-SFR Slanted Star\n\nRecap Video\n\n3:23Electronic Imaging 2024 Recap\n\nWe have many of our talented imaging scientists who are presenting or contributing to the following papers: \nKeynote — Image information metrics from slanted edges: a toolkit of metrics to aid object recognition\, machine vision\, and artificial intelligence systems\nAuthor: Norman Koren \nDownload full text of paper (revised 2026-10)  |  Download slides from talk (PDF) \nMonday\, January 22\, 2024\, 8:50am-9:50am\nPart of Autonomous Vehicles & Machines (AVM) and Image Quality and Systems Performance (IQSP) Joint Session \nThere is increasing evidence that standard sharpness (MTF) and noise measurements correlate poorly with Machine Vision and Artificial Intelligence (MV/AI) system performance. This is not surprising because MV/AI algorithms operate on information rather than pixels. \nWe describe new techniques for measuring noise in the presence of slanted edge signals that enable the calculation of the key metric from information theory\, information capacity\, as well as several additional metrics. \nWe expect information capacity to be a strong predictor of MV/AI system performance\, and because it is relatively unaffected by uniform image processing\, it is the best metric for selecting (i.e.\, qualifying) cameras. Choosing a camera with the minimum number of pixels for the required information capacity should result in the fastest calculations and least power consumption. \nThe most important of the additional metrics\, SNRi and Edge SNRi\, measure the quality of object and edge detection\, which can be enhanced by image processing. We show how to design filters that optimize object and edge detection\, and we discuss the tradeoffs in applying them to real world scenarios. Finally\, we discuss the mathematical framework that ties the new metrics together\, resulting in a powerful and versatile toolkit of measurements. \nThe Image Information Metrics post has details on the new information metrics. \nEvaluation of Signal and Noise Metrics of High Dynamic Range Image Sensors by IEEE P2020 Methodology\nAuthors: Orit Skorka\, Norman Koren\, Jackson Knappen\, Paul Romanczyk\, Jonathan Phillips\, Radu Ispasoiu\nMonday\, January 22\, 2024\, 10:40am-11:10am\nPart of Image Quality and Systems Performance (IQSP) Conference\n \nHigh dynamic range (HDR) image sensors continue to evolve in range capability and ubiquitousness\, particularly with the growth of cameras in automotive applications. The market desire is to keep increasing the dynamic range of image sensors\, with boundaries being pushed beyond 140 decibels. A key image quality attribute for HDR image sensors is the quantification of noise\, both temporal and fixed pattern. The increased\, and increasing\, range of HDR image sensors compared to standard dynamic range sensors in the market is a challenge to characterization of noise. Legacy procedures to quantify image sensor noise were not written with current HDR image sensors in mind\, quantification is generally limited to portions of the operating range. The challenges for measuring both temporal and fixed pattern noise include optimizing lab capture methods to incorporate high dynamic range conditions\, simplification of exposures needed\, and comprehensive analysis. This paper will show applications of the IEEE P2020 noise standard with expanded protocols that account for verification of lab and chart conditions\, and optimization of number of captures and number of pixels needed for analysis. \n \nEvaluating Camera Performance in Face-Present Scenes with Diverse Skin Tones \nRead summary article: Equity in Camera Technologies: How Consumer Cameras Perform Across Skin Tones \nDownload full text of paper \nAuthors: Megan Borek\, Sarah Kerr\, Amelia Spooner\, Paul Romanczyk \nTuesday\, January 23\, 2024\, 9:10am-9:30am\nPart of Image Quality and Systems Performance (IQSP) Conference \nConsumer cameras have become indispensable tools for communication\, content creation\, and remote work. Quality of digital images and videos varies significantly\, influenced by lighting\, hardware\, scene content\, face-detection\, and automatic image processing algorithms. We investigate how camera systems perform in face-present scenes containing diverse skin tones\, and how performance can be objectively measured using standard procedures and analyses. We closely examine image quality factors (IQFs) commonly impacted by scene content\, emphasizing automatic white balance (AWB)\, automatic exposure (AE)\, and color reproduction. We assess the performance of several consumer cameras (web\, phone\, DSLR) with different lighting conditions and skin tones\, expanding on Valued Camera Experience (VCX) standard procedures. Findings indicate that many automatic algorithms cannot accurately depict diverse skin tones. Color shifts\, poor exposure\, and reduced overall image fidelity are unfortunately common for scenes containing darker skin tones\, revealing a major short-coming in modern day image processing. Moreover\, we present a comprehensive evaluation of current standard procedures\, highlighting strengths and limitations in measuring system performance for a range of skin tones. We propose novel targets and testing methodologies\, paving the way for advancements in camera technology that cater to a diverse range of users and environments. \nRecommendations for the Detection and Analysis of the ISO 12233:2023 e-SFR Slanted Star\nDownload full text of paper \nAuthor: Sarah Kerr\nThursday\, January 25\, 2024\, 9:40am-10:00am\nPart of Image Quality and Systems Performance (IQSP) Conference \n \nThe recently published ISO 12233:2023 has introduced a new edge-based spatial frequency response (e-SFR) feature to the standard known as the slanted star. The 4 additional edge orientations available on the slanted star compared to the previously used slanted square feature facilitates comparison between sagittal and tangential SFR with vertical and horizontal SFR across the field of view. However\, the extended utility granted by the extra edges simultaneously complicates reliable automatic placement of appropriate regions of interest (ROIs) for e-SFR analysis\, making it difficult to properly compare the resolution across these orientations. This paper provides recommendations for the efficient and accurate detection and analysis of the ISO 12233 slanted star feature\, based on simulated and experimentally validated results under a variety of challenging conditions.

SUMMARY:Imatest at Electronic Imaging 2023
DESCRIPTION:Imatest is excited to attend Electronic Imaging 2023 in San Francisco\, California! For the first time in three years\, the conference will take place in-person January 15-19th. Imatest will have a strong presence\, with several of our engineers giving talks and presentations. You can also check out our booth to talk with one of our expert engineers and watch a demo of new equipment and software features. Click the dropdowns below to learn more about Imatest’s involvement (events listed in chronological order): \n\n Talk: The revolutionary advancement of camera phone image quality\, Jonathan Phillips\, VP of Imaging Science\n \nMonday\, January 16\, 2023\, 10:40AM – Image Quality and Systems Performance (IQSP) Conference\nThe global impact of camera phones is multi-faceted\, influencing technological advances\, user interface design\, cloud storage\, and image sharing methodologies. The sheer volume of camera phone ownership has dwarfed the existing number of digital still cameras as the camera phone market segment grew from tens of millions in early acceptance years in Japan to annual global sales volumes of over 1 billion for nearly 10 years and counting. This has enabled and pushed forward revolutionary image quality advancement of the incorporated cameras in the multifunctional devices\, progressing from 0.11MP image sensors with 2-inch displays in 1999 to current maximums of 200 MP sensors and 8-inch foldable displays. This overview will provide example images and image quality metrics showing the progression over the past twenty years. Content will also highlight significant technological advancements impacting image quality attributes such as resolution\, low light performance\, dynamic range\, zoom\, and bokeh. \n Talk: Measuring camera information capacity with slanted edges\, Norman Koren\, Founder and CTO \n \nMonday\, January 16\, 2023\, 11:20AM – Image Quality and Systems Performance (IQSP) Conference\nWe describe a new calculation of camera information capacity\, C\, derived from standard 4:1 contrast ratio slanted edges\, that takes advantage of an overlooked capability of the slanted edge that allows the variance and hence the noise of the edge to be calculated in addition to the mean. The average signal and noise power derived from the edge can be entered into the Shannon-Hartley equation to calculate the information capacity of the 4:1 edge signal\, C[4]. Since C[4] is highly sensitive to exposure\, we have developed a more consistent metric\, C[max]\, derived from the maximum allowed signal in the file\, making it an excellent approximation of the camera’s maximum information capacity. Information capacities C[4] and C[max] are excellent figures of merit for system performance because they combine the effects of MTF and noise. They have great potential for predicting the performance of Machine Vision and Artificial Intelligence systems. They are easy to calculate\, requiring no extra effort beyond the standard slanted-edge MTF calculation. \n Talk: Comprehensive stray light (flare) testing: Lessons learned\, Jackson Knappen\, Imaging Science Engineer \n \nTuesday\, January 17\, 2023\, 12:00PM – Autonomous Vehicles and Machines (AVM) Conference\nStray light (also called flare) is any light that reaches the detector (i.e.\, the image sensor) other than through the designed optical path. Depending on the mechanism causing stray light\, it can introduce phantom objects (ghosts) within the scene\, reduce contrast over portions of the image\, and effectively reduce system dynamic range. These factors can adversely affect the application performance of the camera and\, therefore\, stray light measurement is to be included in the upcoming IEEE-P2020 standard for measuring automotive image quality. The stray light of a camera can be measured by capturing images of a bright light source positioned at different angles in (or outside of) the camera’s field of view and then processing those captured images into metric images with associated summary statistics. However\, the setup and light source can have a significant impact on the measurement. In this paper\, we present lessons learned and various technical elements to consider for stray light (flare) testing of digital imaging systems. These elements include the radiometric (e.g.\, brightness) and geometric (e.g.\, size) qualities of the light source and setup. Results are to be presented at the conference. \n Interactive Paper: Implementation of EMVA 1288 Standard Release 4.0 for Characterization of Image Sensors\, Megan Borek\, Rochester Institute of Technology \n \nWednesday\, January 18\, 2023\, 5:30PM to 7PM – Imaging Sensors and Systems 2023 Interactive Papers Session\nThe EMVA 1288 Standard offers a unified method for the objective measurement and analysis of specification parameters for image sensors\, particularly those used in the computer vision industry. Models for both linear and non-linear sensor responses are presented in the version 4.0 release of the standard\, and are applied in the characterization of a commercial DSLR camera sensor. From image capture to analysis\, this paper details the equipment\, methodologies\, and analyses used in the implementation of the latest standard in a controlled lab setting\, serving as both a proof of concept and an evaluation of the presentation and comprehensibility of the standard from a user perspective. Measurements and analyses are made to quantify linearity\, sensitivity\, noise\, nonuniformity\, and dark current of the chosen sensor\, according to the methods laid out in the EMVA 1288 standard. This paper details the realistic implementation of these processes in a controlled lab environment and discusses potential flaws and difficulties in the standard\, as well as complications introduced by nonideal experimental variables. \n\nMain Exhibit\n Tuesday and Wednesday\, January 17 and 18\, 2023\, DaytimeImatest LLC\, Thad Baringer \nDemonstration Session\n Tuesday\, January 18\, 2023\, 5:30-7PMImatest LLC\, Jackson Knappen\, Meg BorekThe highly-popular symposium demonstration sessions provide authors with an additional opportunity to showcase their work.\n \n Register for Electronic Imaging 2023

SUMMARY:Electronic Imaging Symposium 2019
DESCRIPTION:Join Imatest at the Electronic Imaging Symposium from Jan. 13 – 17 in Burlingame\, California USA. Explore the entire imaging science ecosystem\, from capture through image processing to how we and our surrogate machines see and interpret images. Henry Koren and Norman Koren will be presenting on the following. \n \nReducing the cross-lab variation of image quality metrics\nHenry Koren\n \nAs imaging test labs seek to obtain objective performance scores of camera systems\, many factors can skew the results. IEEE Camera Phone Image Quality (CPIQ) Conformity Assessment Steering Committee (CASC) working group members performed round-robin studies where an assortment of mobile devices was tested within heterogeneous imaging labs. This paper investigates how the existence of near-infrared energy in light sources that attempt to simulate CIE illuminants can influence test results. Numerous other impacts\, including the influence of opal diffusers used for uniformity testing\, how test scene framing can alter white balance and exposure\, and how chart quality and texture frequency distribution can skew results. We introduce a test procedure which is intended to reduce intra-lab variability and a method for assessing an independent lab’s competence in conforming with the IEEE testing standards.\n \nDate/Time: Tuesday January 15\, 2019\, 3:50 – 4:10\nLocation: Grand Peninsula Ballroom E\n \n \nCompensating MTF measurements for Chart Quality limitations\nNorman Koren\n \nObjective measurements of imaging system sharpness are typically derived from test chart images. It is generally assumed that if testing instructions are followed—if the chart print quality is fine enough and the chart magnification (on the sensor) is low enough—  test chart quality will have little impact on the overall measurement.\n \nThis assumption may not be valid when extremely high-resolution cameras are tested with standard charts or when smaller than optimum test charts are used because of laboratory or production line space limitations.\n \nMTF compensation is applied by dividing the measured system MTF by chart-projected MTF as a function of the sensor.\n\nMeasurements made under different conditions— with different test charts (transmissive as well as reflective) by different people in different labs— are more consistent.\nThe megapixel suitability of test charts is increased by a factor of approximately 2 (1.4x linearly).\nThe key advantage of MTF compensation is that measurements are more accurate (in an absolute sense).\n\n \nDate/Time: Tuesday January 15\, 2019\, 9:10am\nLocation: Grand Peninsula Ballroom E

SUMMARY:Electronic Imaging 2017
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that we will return to the IS&T Electronic Imaging conference in 2017\, to take place from January 29 – February 2 in Burlingame\, CA. The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport and will feature 20 technical conferences covering a variety of electronic imaging topics\, ranging “from image sensing to display and hardcopy to machine vision in use in transportation systems” (Electronic Imaging). \nWe will have a booth in the exhibition hall and will be demonstrating our software and test charts. Please contact us to meet with our image quality experts.  \nAdditionally\, we will have two speakers featured at EI 2017.  \nMeasuring MTF with wedges: Pitfalls and best practices \n On Monday\, January 30 Imatest founder\, Norman Koren\, joins the Autonomous Vehicles and Machine session to discuss the ISO 16505 standard  for automotive Camera Monitor Systems which uses high contrast hyperbolic wedges instead of slanted-edges to measure system resolution\, defined as MTF10 (the spatial frequency where MTF = 10% of its low-frequency value). In this session\, we will explore the advantages of using the slanted-edges method for measuring MTF10 as opposed to the ISO16505 standard using wedges.  \n Where: Grand Peninsula Ballroom B\n When: Monday\, January 30\, 2017\, at 10:10 am \n\n The Effects of misregistration on the dead leaves cross-correlation texture blur analysis \n On Tuesday\, January 31\, Robert Sumner will present as part of the MTF session. His paper\, co-authored by Ranga Burada and Noah Kram\, explores the effects of the dead leaves cross-correlation algorithm and the variability on MTF curves.  \n The dead leaves image model is often used for measurement of the spatial frequency response (SFR) of digital cameras\, where response to fine texture is of interest. It has a power spectral density (PSD) similar to natural images and image features of varying sizes\, making it useful for measuring the texture-blurring effects of non-linear noise reduction which may not be well analyzed by traditional methods. The standard approach for analyzing images of this model is to compare observed PSDs to the analytically known one. However\, recent works have proposed a cross-correlation based approach which promises more robust measurements via full-reference comparison with the known true pattern. A major assumption of this method is that the observed image and reference image can be aligned (registered) with sub-pixel accuracy. \n Where: Grand Peninsula Ballroom A\n When: Tuesday\, January 31\, 2017\, at 12:10 pm \n  \n
