The simulator includes lens degradations and the effects of Image Signal Processing (ISP). Results can be analyzed for standard image quality metrics such as sharpness and noise, or new metrics, derived from information theory, that provide an improved prediction of machine vision system performance.

9NEWS visited Imatest’s image quality lab in Boulder in August 2025 for Next with Kyle Clark, in a segment on how consumer cameras can reproduce some skin tones less faithfully than others. Imatest imaging scientist Meg Borek shows the skin tone study she leads, which photographs skin tones across the Monk Skin Tone Scale with a range of consumer cameras and lighting to measure how accurately each camera renders them; the researchers were recruiting volunteers to represent each tone on the scale.

An introduction to Simatest, the camera and ISP simulator in Imatest: model complex ISP pipelines and measure the image quality they produce.

The post Introducing Simatest appeared first on Imatest.

A short introduction to Simatest, the camera and image signal processing (ISP) simulator in Imatest. Simatest starts from a raw or simulated image, applies simulated blur (MTF) and sensor noise, and runs it through an ISP pipeline built from blocks such as demosaicing, white balance, color correction, gamma, tone mapping, noise filtering and sharpening, in any order. The result can be analyzed with the same Imatest modules used on real cameras.

The video shows how Simatest lets you model complex ISP pipelines and measure the key image quality metrics they produce, with an example that compares measured and simulated noise and Edge/MTF results for a Panasonic Lumix LX5.
