Image Scientist, Hybrid, Boulder, CO

Imatest is seeking an Image Scientist to join our development team and help advance the software tools used to measure and optimize camera and imaging system performance. This role is ideal for someone with a strong technical foundation in imaging science who enjoys applying theory to practical software workflows, test methods and customer-facing tools.

You’ll work closely with software engineers, product leaders and fellow imaging scientists to improve and extend the algorithms, analysis methods and user workflows that power Imatest products. This role is focused on software and algorithm development for digital imaging systems across industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, machine vision, medical and security.

Responsibilities

• Support the development and improvement of image quality analysis features within Imatest software
• Apply imaging science principles to the design, validation and interpretation of camera test methods and metrics
• Help evaluate and implement algorithms related to image quality
• Analyze image datasets and test results to support product development, validation and customer investigations
• Assist in the lab with testing, verification and benchmarking of new and existing analysis tools
• Contribute to international standards development, technical documentation, application notes and internal knowledge resources
• Support customer-facing technical work as needed, including explaining metrics, troubleshooting results and clarifying best practices
• Participate in cross-functional discussions around feature design and imaging workflows

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Imaging Science, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Machine Vision or a related field
• Experience analyzing image data using Python, MATLAB, C++ or similar technical computing tools
• Ability to interpret experimental data and communicate technical findings clearly
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience through academic coursework, research, or professional work in image quality concepts such as MTF/SFR/sharpness, noise, color, dynamic range, tonal response, distortion and artifact analysis
• Industry or academic experience in camera testing, computational imaging, image processing, computer vision or related fields
• Familiarity with image quality standards such as ISO 12233, ISO 14524, IEEE 2020
• Experience designing experiments, validating algorithms or comparing measurement methods
• Exposure to test automation, scripting or software product development
• Interest in practical imaging systems and real-world measurement challenges
• Experience with AI-assisted development

Salary Range: $80,000 -$110,000 Commensurate with education and experience
