Test plan reference: Slanted-edge modules

This document contains reference data intended to help Imatest users implement test plans that include automatically-detected slanted-edge modules. It describes the most important JSON results, which can be used for Pass/Fail criteria, as well as the key settings needed to get these results.Settings windows and recommended settings

Settings for slanted-edge modules

Slanted-edge modules can be run in either Setup (interactive) or Auto (batch-capable) mode. You can make settings in Setup mode; Auto mode uses saved settings from Setup mode. 

When you run one of  the four auto-detection slanted-edge SFR modules (eSFR ISO, SFRplus, Checkerboard, and SFRreg) in Setup mode, the Setup window, shown below (for eSFR ISO), appears. The More settings window (scroll down) appears if you press More settings. (It can be opened at any time during interactive runs).

These windows are similar, but not identical, the different slanted-edge modules. The detailed description is here. The ROI selection dropdown menu (under ROI selection & analysis) is the setting that differs most notably for different modules. 

The recommended settings below are not complete — many have little or no effect on the results (though they may affect some displays).

For most test plans, several ROIs in the center, part-way, and corner regions are recommended. All ROIs may not be needed. The value shown, 14. ctrs, all inner, is a good choice.
Speedup checked Speeds up runs. Good with virtually all functions (except for a very few, like ROI histograms). Also in [2].
Edges   Vertical, horizontal, both (and some other choices). Customer decision.
Extra reg. marks   For charts with extra reg mark patterns outside the chart. See 
Step chart   Check is grayscale stepchart is present and results (gamma, etc.) are needed. (Can usually leaved checked.)
Wedge   Check only if wedge results are needed. More detail on which wedges are selected is in More settings.
Analyze color patches   Check if color pattern is present and color results are desired.
ROI size ~80-85% Affects size of ROI. Smaller may be needed for barrel-distorted images.
Crop borders (off) Press if interfering patterns outside the test chart are causing difficulties in detecting the chart. Not recommended for Auto runs, where the farming and background (ideally plain middle gray) should be set to minimize interference.
Channel Y (luminance) is usually recommend. R, G, B, or Y are the usual choices (except for undemosaiced images)
Chart contrast (for gamma) usually 4 or 10 Available if Use for MTF is checked and chart contrast ≤ 10. Also in [2].
Use for MTF checked If checked and chart contrast ≤ 10, gamma for linearization is calculated from pixel levels in the ROI. Also in [2]

MTF plot units 4. LW/PH for overall image sharpness For testing similar cameras (with same pixel size) the choice of plot units is not critical. It’s more important when comparing different cameras with different sensors, fields of view, etc. See 
Secondary readout as needed. Secondary readouts let you display and use for pass/fail any of several sharpness-related summary metrics: MTFnn, MTFnnP (for percentage nn), MTF @ nn units, where nn is a spatial frequency in any of the supported units (Cycles/pixel, LP/mm, Cycles/angle, etc.), and MTF Area (below Nyquist) normalized to peak value (insensitive to extreme sharpening).

Key JSON results

We encourage Imatest users to examine JSON output from their test runs. Most JSON output is easily readable and somewhat self-explanatory (the extra detail on this page will be helpful). JSON output for an eSFR ISO run of an image from a consumer camera is in the Appendix below (we had difficulty uploading it). 

This tables below contain key results written to the JSON output of slanted-edge modules. It is not intended to be complete. These results can be used for Pass/Fail criteria. (In some cases code may need to be added to Imatest.)

 

Summary results (from multiple ROIs)

Many results from slanted-edge modules are calculated for individual ROIs (Regions of Interest) and displayed arrays (one result per ROI) in the JSON output. In a great many cases, results for individual ROIs are of less interest than summary results for multiple ROIs taken over specified regions of the image. To address this issue, we have created a number of summary results, indicated by “_summary” in their name. Center is defined as up to 30% of the center-to corner distance, Part-way is defined as 30-70%, and Corner is defined as ≥70%. Each summary metric has 11 values. In the JSON file they are summarized as

Summary metrics, indicated by “_summary” in their name, are used in several places in Imatest:  in Batchview, for displaying results from multiple regions and 3D plots, and for Pass/Fail settings. Note that results for individual ROIs are in the JSON outputs— often the same root name, but without “_summary”.

Example: The weighted mean of MTF50P in Cycles/Pixel, taken over the entire image is mtf50p_CP_summary(6). Note that most results are shown for all regions. For example, “mtf50p”: [0.395,0.3707,0.2646,0.2765,0.3104,0.3155], contains MTF50P for all selected ROIs. These values are used to calculate the summary values (above), which are more useful for Pass/Fail.

Key input values, which affect results

Table 5  contains the JSON display name for key input settings and comments that indicate where they are set in Imatest Master— usually in one of the two settings windows shown below: [1] the Setup window (which appears first), and/or [2] the More settings window. These settings are important because they may affect the results.

The INI file name is shown in a small font below the JSON name. (It is sometimes different for historical reasons; JSON was introduced much later than INI files). We typically recommend using the Imatest Master settings windows.

“json_display_name” The name in the JSON file, shown in quotations. Often longer and more descriptive than the ini file name (which we are reluctant to change because it would affect backwards compatibility. 
INI file name The name in the ini file. Comments will indicate where the variable is set in Imatest Master settings windows. If you use Imatest Master settings windows, you may be able to ignore the actual INI file name.
We recommend using Imatest Master to enter settings, though there are occasions when INI files are useful. The JSON display is primarily used to indicate the input settings for the individual run (which may affect the results).

Gamma for linearizing image. Not used if chart contrast is ≤10 and “Use for MTF” in [1] and [2] is checked. Typically derived from grayscale results.

A three-valued variable. (1) is the index of the chart contrast ratio; (2) is the actual contrast ratio value; (3) indicates use contrast to calculate gamma for linearization (if chart contrast < 20). Appendix 1: JSON output file

Click Show JSON file contents to see the JSON file. There has been one significant change from the example: only five slanted-edge regions have been selected. This greatly reduces the size of the JSON file and improves its readability by reducing the length of several  output arrays (ROI_Edge_ID, roi_mult, etc.). A few non-essential lines have been removed for brevity.
